»I think the most important thing about the storm shelters is to make sure that every part of the city has one and that people know where they are. Using sturdy public buildings or well-built churches is an excellent idea.
»There are a lot of proven ways to make communities livable for all ages and abilities. Just google "livable communities". The first thing would be to ensure affordable housing and neighborhoods that are walkable. Also, don't forget VITAL elements like a grocerhy store, health providers and great schools. Make the whole community a place where all people want to live.

»I think that people should clean up after their dogs EVERYWHERE. I am a dog owner, and it shames me to see so much dog waste in public parks around town. It is a health hazard, and dog waste bags should be available at parks. It should be REQUIRED for owners to pick up after their dogs.
»I agree completely with this, but first the coal slurry spill in Lake Tuscaloosa needs to be addressed before we make it more accessible for people to swim in it and enjoy it. We need clean drinking water as well as a safe and fun recreation area.
»I agree with the single family concept. We need to rebuild neighborhoods and mixed income is important. I lived in Bent Tree and crime was horrible due to Rosedale. Rosedale and Alberta need to be rebuilt in a way that does not concentrate poverty. Rosedale dragged down a 1 mile radius around it, and it would be a shame to let it go back that way in the center of our city.
We currently have a mixed income community in Tuscaloosa that thrives. I now live behind the VA and it is a very diverse area with mixed incomes. I haven't had a single crime problem and everyone gets along. Kozy's is also located there, one of the only restaurants in a Tuscaloosa single family neighborhood. We should have more of these and incorporate more bars, restaurants, and shops in our neighborhoods and not let UA determine where everyone drinks. The five points area in Atlanta is another example of an area that mixes restaurants, retail and single family and it is a pleasant area.
»Another thing to look at is an overpass on 15th crossing McFarland. With the destruction of the 4 properties on the corners of that intersection, now would be the time to purchase those to make room for the interchange.
