Developing a more comprehensive recycling program, and possibly one that can process glass, aluminum, and styrofoam (polystyrene) could increase the number of individuals recycling, and lead to more jobs in the Tuscaloosa area.

by Anne W It would be fabulous if we could recycle more types of plastics (#3 - 7) and plastic wrappings, such as:
    •Grocery bags
•Retail bags (hard plastic and string handles removed)
•Paper towel and toilet paper plastic wrap
    •Plastic newspaper bags
    •Plastic dry cleaning bags
•All clean, clear bags labeled with a #2 or #4

This site is a fantastic resource on how to go about making this happen in Tuscaloosa locations:

by Jim I Recycling would be better served by opening the stream to more materials that can be recycled. For instance, open the plastics stream to accept Types 1-7 and catch a sizable number of materials that are currently going to landfill. Larger recycling bins/carts would also make it easier to collect items for recycling.

by Coryanne G It's not all about money, but also about saving valuable raw materials like oil, gaz, coal etc. and preserving the environment. Larger carts? That is ridiculous. The carts here are three times larger already than those used in Europe. It is important to reduce waste and recycle. I recycled paper and plastic before the tornado and my waste bin was never full! Now, I am recycling cans and glass as well! There is almost nothing left for the residual waste bin! People need to rethink! The city will save on fuel, wages, tire wear etc. because regular waste will be picked up not once a week, but probably only every two weeks in the future!

by rummy I wish the city would go to one day a week pickup on garbage with larger carts. This would save the city money on fuel, wages, tire wear, maintenance etc. The savings could be used to spend towards the recycling effort. Recycling is a money loser most of the time.

by Coryanne G I read an article in Tuscaloosa News saying that citywide curbside recycling is approved by the city.

Do you have further information? And - What do you mean by "fortunately"? ...

by Steven D Fortunately, the city is way ahead of you. Since the city lost so much of its sanitation fleet, they're not considering going to citywide recycling in order to save on future costs.

by Coryanne G People need information about recycling. Only few households still recycle, now that the curbside recycling is suspended.

by Coryanne G The recycling program needs to be developped. I think households should separate waste. We needs different bins for different recycables, and they need to be closed.
