Change isn't easy. Some businesses will fight tooth and nail against the new vision, seeking zoning variances and exceptions in order to maintain the status quo. Others will creatively embrace the concepts of village centers, coordinated facilities, model neighborhoods, and other aspects of the vision by moving quickly to showcase (through their actions) their businesses as supportive of Tuscaloosa Forward. Private sector businesses that are on the leading edge of the transformation should be recognized for their efforts. A "Mayor's Circle" could be established to provide such recognition. Recognition would be in the form of publicity and perhaps a brass plaque recognizing the organization for its contributions to implementing the vision of Tuscaloosa Forward. One way this could work would be that the City's Planning and Development Services could select nominees for the award. (This seems like the natural spot to do a first screening as requests for building permits, variances, inspections, etc. all flow through them.) A second, non-government, committee/group (e.g. Tuscaloosa Neighborhoods Together, or selected individuals) could then screen nominees and make recommendations to the Mayor as to the most deserving businesses for the awards. The criteria used in making an award should be flexible but would be based on actions taken that mark the company as a leader in implementing the Tuscaloosa Forward vision, not simply through grudging compliance but exhibiting energy, creativity, and desire to make the new vision a success. A well-publicized formal awards ceremony should follow.
